Salary to Hourly Calculator
Convert an annual salary into its true hourly rate — plus weekly, biweekly, and monthly equivalents. Works both directions: enter an hourly wage to see the annual salary.
How the conversion works
The standard formula assumes a full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, 52 weeks a year — 2,080 working hours:
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ 2,080
So $75,000 a year is 75,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ $36.06 per hour. The quick mental shortcut: divide the salary in thousands by 2. $75k → about $37.50/hr — slightly high because the shortcut assumes 2,000 hours, but close enough for negotiations.
Quick reference table (40 hrs/week)

Salaried vs. hourly: what the number hides
- Unpaid overtime cuts your real rate. A $75,000 salary at 50 actual hours/week is really $28.85/hr, not $36.06. Set "hours per week" above to your true schedule to see it.
- Paid vacation raises it. If you get 4 weeks paid vacation, you work 48 weeks but are paid for 52 — your rate per worked hour is about 8% higher. Set working weeks to 48 to see your effective rate.
- Benefits are invisible here. Employer health insurance, retirement matching, and payroll taxes typically add 20–35% on top of salary. When comparing a salaried job to freelancing, a freelance rate needs to be substantially higher to break even — our compound interest calculator helps you value that retirement match over time.
These are pre-tax numbers
Everything above is gross pay. Take-home pay in the US is typically 20–35% lower after federal and state income tax, Social Security, and Medicare — the exact bite depends on your state and filing status.
Frequently asked questions
Why 2,080 hours?
40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080. It's the standard used by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and most HR departments. Some employers use 2,088 (based on 261 weekdays) — the difference is under 0.4%.
How do I convert hourly to salary?
Multiply by 2,080 (or use the second field above). $25/hour × 2,080 = $52,000 a year.
Why is biweekly pay not the same as twice-monthly?
Biweekly means every 2 weeks — 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month — 24 paychecks. Same annual total, different check sizes.
Does this include overtime pay?
No. In the US, non-exempt hourly workers earn 1.5× for hours over 40/week; most salaried workers are exempt and receive no overtime — which is exactly why the real-hours calculation above matters.
